Cool girls!
Posted by admin in Commercial Photography on October 22nd, 2009

Great grungy attitude!
This would’ve been the coolest thing when I was young too, win a competition that lets you record a song for real with your friends - and have a pro photographer shoot you like a star!
So it was for these lovely girls, and it was great fun for me too! I met them at Billy Hyde studio, Adelaide, which had a great side-street with real rock star walls around it, so of course we had to do some cool grungy portraits there!

The cool garage door, lonely figure scene

I’m pleased to say that I did know the songs that the girls were making their own! And enjoyed the buffet that the stars mums had put on, the whole thing was really quite festive!

Beautiful Rubbish!
Posted by admin in Commercial Photography on September 10th, 2009
Is it possible for a waste company’s landfill site to be beautiful? I certainly didn’t think so, but I was quite impressed when I went out to Elizabeth to photograph for NAWMA (North Adelaide Waste Management Ass.)
Indeed the smell wasn’t too nice! However, it wasn’t too bad to look at! Their landfill or dump site is situated out in the countryside of Elizabeth, not visable from the road, but nestled amongst beautiful green rolling hills and farmland. When standing at the highest point of the landfill, my view was of a patchwork of fields below. And indeed it wasnt just the surrounding landscape that impressed, maybe because I haven’t been to a landfill since I was a child and it was called a ‘dump’, but the actual site was quite neat! Rubbish is no longer ‘dumped’ but arranged and compacted into cubes and then covered by dirt. The excavated area of hill reveals quite pretty patterns and contrasting colours in the different layers of dirt. So I happily shot away until I was quite tired!
The previous day I photographed at their waste management and sorting premises. Indeed this was not so pretty, but still full of stimulation for an enthused photographer! Huge warehouses full of machinary, garbage trucks unloading tons of rubbish, workers sorting the waste in a production line, moving platforms throwing rubbish in a continuous waterfall of paper, plastic & unrecognisables!
It’s a shoot I might call gross but fun! Advice I’d give - it’s tough in the low light, tripod is great, but not if your up on the machinary! Don’t put your camera bag down on the floor, yuk! I’ll now have to scrub mine. Equally - don’t kneel to get the shot - learn to squat! And watch your elbows when leaning over the moving rubbish, I nearly collected a few scraps with mine!

Sweet & sick
Posted by admin in Commercial Photography on July 28th, 2009
Saturday’s shoot was one of those - I love my job days. Go out with the coastguard to photograph a sail ship (the One & All) in full sail on open water? Awesome!
Of course I considered the possibility of sea-sickness and so I professionally prepared for that and took tablets before I went out. I didn’t however, prepare for them not to work very well!
Four hours in a very small boat (coastguard or not, it was a small boat!) rolling up and down quite large swell, trying to shoot a ship in full sail - when it couldn’t get its sails up, was not as pleasant as i’d anticipated.
I only got completely drenched once though, which is quite good considering I was on my knees (shooting, not puking) at water level (below swell level really) for most of the time.
Though we did get dolphins, after 2 hours the excitement had worn off and I began to feel quite pukey. What to do? The sails were not up and the spec was to get the ship in full sail. So another 2 hours go by and although I’m still shooting I’m also starting to make small pathetic whimpering noises, no longer caring about decorum.
A call to the ship confirms that its not going to happen for a while (thanks for letting us know) and I whimper the beautiful words - ok that’s enough.
Sweet, sweet land. It’s so solid and unmoving!
It was a great experience of course, great fun! And i’ve since heard about sea-sickness bracelets for your wrists that apparantly work wonders, so that’s the plan for next time!

Swinging 60’s
Posted by admin in Commercial Photography, General Photography Stuff on June 25th, 2009
These 60 year olds today hey? What are they like!
I was recently asked to photograph for an hour at a 60th birthday party.
Indeed a photographers dream shoot is always the social event
(hee hee!). Well at least most photographers at some point, have had to do some social photography and can probably relate to the joyous feeling of snapping people as soon as they arrive, getting the awkward couple as they hold up their first drink for the night or coping with those round tables where everyone would like to be in the shot, but not move from their chair - scenarios!
Fortunately, the wise one who hired me thought it might be best to come around 9pm, after people had mostly finished their meal. Could be ok, I thought, or maybe, being 60, they’ll be getting cranky and ready for bed?
How wrong was I! Nicely liquered-up and full-tummied party-goers were all too keen to be photographed, and not just in the typical stand and salute with champagne glass at chest height pose either, but the friendly hair-ruffling, head-locking, cheek kissing stuff - and that was just the blokes!
Who knew 60 year olds could be so. . .fun! There was dancing with twirling and dipping and even an announcement of an engagement.
It’s all very encouraging to me, as I enter my 30’s. And, mental note for future social photography - if you have control over when to go, it’s worth waiting til a bit later in the evening - I had fun and their photos are fun to look at too!

Country music singer (Winter Shoots ctnd)
Posted by admin in Commercial Photography on June 18th, 2009
So here are the results so far of the photos at Waite Campus in Adelaide, as mentioned in awesome previous blogs.
This beautiful girl Melody Feder requested photos for her website, she’s a country music singer and wanted a rustic feel to the photos with a mix of moody and bright.
We came here on two different days to try and get at least one day with a bit of sunshine, which we almost accomplished! This place still has many untapped photo locations around it. It can be problematic, I think, to have too many choices when you’re still limited to available light time. It’s often better to have less choice because then you have to work it more, rather than feel you have to use every area quickly. Still, I think we got some great shots, she’s a good little poser! I especially like the series along the fence. Instead of editing down the number of images in this pose (on the computer), I found that each of her expressions were so thoroughly different and a couple so engaging that they were causing my mood to shift entirely as I changed between them! I don’t think I’ve really had that before with a posed subject in the same pose. Does that make sense? Anyway, good on you Melody! Remember me when you’re a star!

THE AUSTRALIA CAMBODIA FOUNDATION
Posted by admin in Commercial Photography, General Photography Stuff, Wedding Photography on June 16th, 2009
We were photographing a wedding, maybe a year ago, inside the Adelaide Uni (nth tce), when we came across an entire entourage of gorgeous Cambodian children, in costume, rehearsing for their performance later that night. After some shy waving between the two groups, we asked them if they’d like to be in a wedding photo, which they really did, and so my carefully groomed bridal party were swamped with beautiful, colourful Combodian performers!
Later that night Morne and I decided to go back and check out the performance. We were privelidged to get backstage and photograph some of the children as they were preparing to go on. Fully flash-lit of course, as you can imagine, backstage is not a very light area. But the children seemed to make up for the dark. Beautiful faces in amazing costumes!
We were then able to watch the rest of the show from the front row where we took some more shots of the great performances, they did some amazing stuff!
I mention it now only because I was contacted by THE AUSTRALIA CAMBODIA FOUNDATION yesterday as they will be using some of those photos in their calender which will be available at the children’s next performance in Sydney.
I’ve attached it here (hopefully), it looks great! Most of the photos are by another photographer and they also look great, ours are July, October, December.

Winter Shoots (and bad French accents)
Posted by admin in Commercial Photography on June 14th, 2009
Photographing in winter is always fun isn’t it?!
I took a commercial shoot to the Waite Campus (mentioned in a previous blog) on Saturday, a day which started out with so much sun! Of course, as happens in Adelaide, dark, dark rain clouds were soon upon us.
It’s not that I so much mind shooting around rain shower bursts, lying on my side in the mud or quietly observing the slow flattening of my client’s hair…It’s just that my cleverly anticipated afternoon light changes, before my very lens, to unflexible dark, darkness.
Best thing to do? Throw up the hands dramatically and in an amused, arty tone declare (and for some reason now I can picture it in a French accent), “Ah, zee light ‘as escaped us!” And basically hope your client is able to finish another day. (Of course, as a true professional, I did establish that this was an option from the beginning
)
So we’ll be going back later this week as I want to get some shots of my client with the grapevines, which at the moment are the lovely autumn yellow/orange colour, and with the 4-ish pm sun that I love at the moment shining on them, we should be able to make “ze little beeet of majiiic ‘appen.” (yes that’s supposed to be my French accent again, sorry - I have a glass of red in my hand now!)
Photos up for your scrutiny later this week.

5 mins
Posted by admin in Commercial Photography on June 12th, 2009
Wow, I haven’t had to shoot a group of people in just 5 minutes for a while!
Literally, literally, 5 minutes. It’s such a shame when that happens, especially when you’ve already spied a few different spots you want to put them in. But alas, it happens. Especially with corporate clients, it can’t be helped sometimes. And it is good in a way, it certainly tests you!
I know newspaper photographers probably think that 5 mins is actually a luxury! Wow! A whole 5 minutes, that’s great!
I had more time with some of the other people to do their individual portraits thank goodness, and I definately made up for the initial lack of time with them!
The people were great though which really helps!
Couple of the groups shots are here, to see the rest click here:

Always stop and ask
Posted by admin in Commercial Photography on June 11th, 2009
I have a commercial job approaching that requires me to find a suitable location.
So i’ve been racking my brain and those of colleagues, alas to no avail (yes I need to get on a photography forum, I know!).
Finally today, as I was on the way home from another shoot, I spied the small but wonderful sight of the grapevines up at Waite Campus of Adelaide University, just off Cross Road. Do you know it? Apparantly lots of people don’t and I certainly did not know such a lovely place was right on my doorstep, even though I’ve lived here how long?
So not yet knowing what this place was (it looked like a school, though I knew it wasn’t Urbrae, “what is this magical place?” I thought…dorkily), I threw a uey and pulled into the carpark. Tentatively I got out of the car and decided, hell with it, i’ll go straight into this building (labelled Security) and see if I’m really worthy of being here.
A lovely security man (indeed is there any other kind?) greeted me and upon hearing my eloquently stated request (er, can i bring someone here to photograph ‘em?), he decided I would need the full tour to ensure I found the best photo spots!
So tour and history lesson I did get (um, I’ve forgotton most of it now, but its a huge place with lots of history) and bad I did feel that I had no idea about any of this before. Thanks to Roger (lovely security/tour guide), for educating and driving me round the whole place, indeed every little precious nook and cranny! I just hope I can find all of them again!
So chickees, always stop and ask if you get a feeling for anything (um, photography related anyway), you may do better than just trying to spot things yourself and you may even get a little anecdote to blog about!
cheers

sunlight
Posted by admin in Commercial Photography on June 4th, 2009
I just finished a quick commercial shoot, it’s classified as a commercial shoot but it’s more editorial, a couple of portraits for a company magazine. It wasn’t that late, around 4pm, but the sunlight was that great dark gold colour, which I noticed as soon as I got out of the car. Thinking I’d use it for back rim light first I soon saw that that wasn’t working as the sun was too low (this is in the front yard of a house, suburbs), and the shade light from surrounding trees was way too blue. So I moved my two subjects to the backyard and after trying some side-lighting which also wasn’t working, I actually for the first time (i think), turned my subjects directly facing the sunlight and viola! Beautiful golden lit faces and no squinting or eye shadows! Thankyou 4.00 light!
