Glenelg, South Australia
Posted by admin in General Photography Stuff, Travel Photography on July 22nd, 2010
The shot of the jetty running off into the ocean is an “oldie but a goodie” as they say.
But when photographing an area it is certainly worth turning your back on the “obvious” photo.
I got some lovely pictures of the Glenelg Jetty, about 20 minutes from the Adelaide centre, with a wonderful cloud formation in the sky. I made this a black and white photographs. I also wanted a shot looking back at the land. As people rushed past me to the end of the jetty with cameras in hand, they flashed the odd glance of “this guy is crazy” as I ignored the beautiful sunset behind me and rather took pictures of Glenelg itself. Funny thing is, I was the only one taking pictures in that direction.
The resulting photograph has some beautiful blue sky and excellent light. Remeber to always use a tripod in low light conditions

Kept in the dark

Toward the Light
Keturah and I drove to Callington for a Thursday training session at the football club. Footy, like rugby is a winter sport. Unfortunately, that means very early sunsets.
In summer time, in Adelaide, the sun goes down as late as 21:30, but on this freezing Adelaide Hills night, it was well dark at the start of training at about 18:30.
We always knew that this would be the case, we just hoped that the flood lights lighting the field would be powerful enough for us to shoot pictures.

Stretches
Shooting with a 1D Mark IV (for fast focus tracking) and a 5D Mark II (for 21 Megapixel quality and full frame sensor), both cameras we were able to shoot at about 8000 iso filmspeed. The quality looks ok. I guess we will find out when we try and print them really big.
The final result were some interesting pictures where the lights are mostly the feature of the picture. Also, the use of long shutter speeds to create movement is an advantage to create some different shots.
Cheers

Swinging 60’s

These 60 year olds today hey? What are they like!
I was recently asked to photograph for an hour at a 60th birthday party.
Indeed a photographers dream shoot is always the social event
(hee hee!). Well at least most photographers at some point, have had to do some social photography and can probably relate to the joyous feeling of snapping people as soon as they arrive, getting the awkward couple as they hold up their first drink for the night or coping with those round tables where everyone would like to be in the shot, but not move from their chair - scenarios!
Fortunately, the wise one who hired me thought it might be best to come around 9pm, after people had mostly finished their meal. Could be ok, I thought, or maybe, being 60, they’ll be getting cranky and ready for bed?
How wrong was I! Nicely liquered-up and full-tummied party-goers were all too keen to be photographed, and not just in the typical stand and salute with champagne glass at chest height pose either, but the friendly hair-ruffling, head-locking, cheek kissing stuff - and that was just the blokes!
Who knew 60 year olds could be so. . .fun! There was dancing with twirling and dipping and even an announcement of an engagement.
It’s all very encouraging to me, as I enter my 30’s. And, mental note for future social photography - if you have control over when to go, it’s worth waiting til a bit later in the evening - I had fun and their photos are fun to look at too!

THE AUSTRALIA CAMBODIA FOUNDATION
Posted by admin in Commercial Photography, General Photography Stuff, Wedding Photography on June 16th, 2009
We were photographing a wedding, maybe a year ago, inside the Adelaide Uni (nth tce), when we came across an entire entourage of gorgeous Cambodian children, in costume, rehearsing for their performance later that night. After some shy waving between the two groups, we asked them if they’d like to be in a wedding photo, which they really did, and so my carefully groomed bridal party were swamped with beautiful, colourful Combodian performers!
Later that night Morne and I decided to go back and check out the performance. We were privelidged to get backstage and photograph some of the children as they were preparing to go on. Fully flash-lit of course, as you can imagine, backstage is not a very light area. But the children seemed to make up for the dark. Beautiful faces in amazing costumes!
We were then able to watch the rest of the show from the front row where we took some more shots of the great performances, they did some amazing stuff!
I mention it now only because I was contacted by THE AUSTRALIA CAMBODIA FOUNDATION yesterday as they will be using some of those photos in their calender which will be available at the children’s next performance in Sydney.
I’ve attached it here (hopefully), it looks great! Most of the photos are by another photographer and they also look great, ours are July, October, December.
cheers
